About us

Holifield Farm is a community project with many friends. The aim of Holifield Farm Project is to be holistic and inclusive, and to promote a sustainable living ethos.

The farm is a 32 acre organic small holding which includes 20 acres of arable land and 10 acres of woodland and scrubland. It is in a beautiful location near the Helford River near Helston in Cornwall.

Holifield Farm Project was started by Robert West 25 years ago. Robert bought the land with the intention of starting a community educational centre and our objectives and challenges are still the same today. When he bought the land in 1992 it had no buildings on it. Robert first built a studio and workshop and set up the educational centre, initially working with children and young adults from urban areas coming out of secure units.  Holifield Farm Project soon redirected in to providing  Day Care for local people with Special Needs.  Since then we have built a new tearoom, a farm house, polytunnels, and created a woodland walk and lots of gardens. We have planted thousands of trees and created 3 orchards.  We have invested in green energy and are proud to say that we are are 75% self sufficient in terms of energy consumption.

We have four businesses. Our main business is our Day Care facility for adults with Learning Difficulties & special needs which operates for 5 days a week. We offer a range of activities including horticulture, animal care, woodland management skills, conservation and country walks, arts and crafts, and music and yoga.  We farm organically in our polytunnels and gardens and have a small stock of livestock.  We are recommended as a highly professional and important service within our sector. In many situations we support not only the trainee, but the family or home circumstances. The success of our day care centre is that we have an average growth of 10% per year and many of the original trainees or clients who started with us over 20 years ago are still happily working with us today. Currently we have 38 trainees attending on their own personal timetables.

We also have 3 supporting businesses that compliment the Day Care centre. These are Marquee hire, the processing of reclaimed hardwood and our organic farm produce. The reclaimed hardwood was donated to Holifield Farm Project from Falmouth Docks.  it is one of the largest reclamation projects in Cornwall with over 3000 tons of hardwood.

We currently employ, directly and indirectly, 20 members of staff who are skilled and qualified within their field. We have 5 units of accommodation for the supporting staff of the Holifield Farm Project. These are people who are qualified and skilled in their area, choosing to live in a more ethical, sustainable and low impact lifestyles.  We are a committed group of people, who enjoy working together and living this sustainable lifestyle.

The sister project is Zelda School, which is a nursery school for 2 – 8 year old children, which is run in 2 yurts on the farm and has a unique philosophy.

We also run community events from small events such as Holifield Camping Weekend which is aimed at people with additional needs, their carers and families and attracts about 300 people,  to Holifair, which has 3000 people attending.

We are soon to start building a new classroom and office and we are looking for investors to help us to fund this project. This classroom will enable us to expand and offer more workshops to the trainees with special needs who come here on a daily basis. It will also be available to the wider community. The building will be as sustainable as possible and will be using reclaimed and recycled materials where available.
